Bandit Queen (1996) is a Hindi-language Indian feature film about the lives of female bandits in India, written and directed by Shekhar Kapur. It stars Seema Biswas, Nandita Das and Anil Kapoor. The film is based on the life of Phoolan Devi, an Indian bandit turned politician who was later assassinated in 2001. The eponymous protagonist is played by Seema Biswas, a member of the lower-caste Dalits. The film was produced by two giants of Indian cinema: Shekhar Kapur and Subhash Ghai. Its score was composed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The film is considered one of the better-known films about Upper-caste women committing robbery, although it also deals with the lives of female bandit queens in general.
