A lot of people might know the tai chi from its popularity in popular culture, from martial arts movies to TV shows. However, not many people might actually know the long history of tai chi and its roots. Although tai chi is really just a form of martial arts today, it has existed for several hundred years. Some scholars believe that the origins of tai chi can be traced back to the ancient Chinese martial art of "wu shu" (無技) or "wu" (無; "without"). Wu is the source of all martial arts. The use of modern techniques and terminology began in China during the 20th century. The Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD) was considered the golden age because Confucianism spread across China, Confucianism taught that one should act morally and act with humanity, which could be seen as the driving force for people to practice wushu. Other forms of martial arts in this era were also practiced in the Eastern Han Dynasty, which was led by Emperor Shun. However, wushu is considered to be one of the most important martial arts in China in the 20th century. The Tang Dynasty is considered to be the golden age in Chinese history for many reasons. The dynasty's political influence was felt all across China and also promoted a strong economy and technology. Martial arts were also used throughout China during this time period and were practiced publicly for people who wanted to improve their self-defense skills or get into unusual forms of combat that did not involve weapons such as swords and spears, but rather involved special moves similar to today's western martial arts such as karate and fencing. The Song Dynasty (960–1279) was very influential for the martial arts because it was the first time when many women took part in martial arts training. However, women in China who participated in wushu were not given a chance to participate in tournaments, which limited their abilities. This did not stop them from taking up the artform. During this period, many government officials were also allowed to participate in matches and combat to strengthen their military skills and learn how to fight. The Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) had a lot of influence on Chinese culture and art during its time period because it had been affected by Japanese culture from the 12th century until the 19th century. During the Ming Dynasty, martial arts were practiced with military and self-defense purposes. The Qing Dynasty was considered a peaceful era for China because it focused on government and promoted a strong economy. Martial arts were also encouraged to be practiced with less violence and more control. Then, after the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1912, many martial arts schools became open to anyone who wanted to study them with no specific topic or combat style requirements, which allowed people from all classes of society to practice them regardless of their background or wealth. The Japanese came with their own culture to China during the Ming Dynasty. The Japanese had been familiar with many Asian cultures at this time period but they brought their own influence as well. cfa1e77820
